The Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiads is a premier mathematics competition for high school students in Zimbabwe and Malawi, designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Mathematics Olympiad is a competition that was founded by Old Mutual in 1984 in conjunction with the University of Zimbabwe’s Mathematics Department. It is also affiliated with the International Mathematics Olympiad. Old Mutual has been dedicated to unlocking human potential through this competition ever since.

The Mathematics Olympiad is a school competition open to students in forms 4 to 6. This competition aims to:

  • Ignite Passion: Discover the thrill of solving complex mathematical problems and uncover the beauty of numbers.
  • Unlock Opportunities: Stand out from the crowd and impress universities, potential employers, and scholarship providers by participating in this renowned competition.
  • Build Confidence: Sharpen their critical thinking skills, enhance problem-solving abilities, and boost their confidence in tackling real-world challenges.

Mathematics is taught throughout the school following the ‘mastery’ curriculum’s three aims of fluency, reasoning mathematically and problem solving. The intention of this approach is to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ – in mathematics.
